Now that summer is officially in full swing, it’s time to soak up the sun and head to the beach. Luckily for residents at 3Roots, there are multiple world-class beaches just a short car ride away. We’ve done the research so you don’t have to, and located the 5 best beaches within 20 miles of our community. Whether you want to surf, play games, or relax on the sand, there’s something for everyone on this list.
First up we have La Jolla Shores Beach, located 7.8 miles from 3Roots.
Locals have dubbed this the best beach in San Diego, especially for families with small children. Beach goers can spend the day sunbathing along the 1-mile stretch of beach or take advantage of the flat sandy shore to go surfing or kayaking. Two perks of heading to La Jolla Shores Beach include the La Jolla kayak tour as well as surfing lessons.
The next closest beach is Marine Street Beach, located 12.7 miles away.
With wide, white sand Marine Street Beach in La Jolla is one of the best beaches around. Sitting between two rock reef points, this is a famous location for surfers and bodyboarders. The waves and tides have been known to be rough and unpredictable to inexperienced swimmers, so please use caution when swimming. If you’re not up for a swim, the wide beach offers great spots for beach games including volleyball.
Next up we have Wandansea Beach, located 13.1 miles from 3Roots.
The least family-friendly beach on the list is Wandanea Beach. Instead, this is a surfer’s dream destination due to its colorful surf history since 1909. When you’re not catching waves, cool off in the historic palm-covered surf shack.
A little farther away we have, Moonlight Beach, located 16.3 miles away in Encinitas.
Back to more family-friendly spots, not only does Moonlight Beach offer sandy shores to spend the day, but there’s also a grassy park to take the kids to with a dedicated play area. There is a “swimming only zone” to help keep swimmers safe from surfers, a lifeguard on duty, and a gradual shoreline. Some other key amenities include an on-site snack bar, showers, picnic areas, gear rentals, and beach volleyball courts.
Lastly, we have, Mission Beach, located 18 miles from 3Roots.
Play beach volleyball, rent bikes or roller skates to cruise down the Ocean Front Walk, or take a swim in the ocean, Mission Beach has something for everyone. It is important to note that there is a North and South section, with the South offering more water activities and the North having a much more lively offshore scene with Belmont Park, a historic amusement park with a roller coaster, bumper cars, and arcade. Either way, you are bound to have a good time at Mission Beach!
While these are our top 5 favorites near Sorrento Mesa, there are dozens of world-class beaches at your fingertips in San Diego County.
